Landmarks in Biochemistry Symposium 2025

June 5-6 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

About the Event

The Landmarks in Biochemistry Symposium is an event conceived by the Institute of Medical Biochemistry Leopoldo de Meis (IBqM), and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023. In 2013, it brought three renowned figures in biochemistry to Brazil, including the 2002 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Kurt Wüthrich, who revolutionized the field of two-dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies.

This event is highly significant for researchers and students of the Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry (PPGQB), as well as for undergraduate students and faculty members from other UFRJ units and higher education institutions in Rio de Janeiro. The symposium provides learning opportunities, access to high-level lectures, and collaboration with internationally renowned researchers. Furthermore, it fosters exchanges between researchers and students, strengthening academic and professional training.

This edition of the event is also a tribute to Prof. Mario Alberto Cardoso da Silva Neto, the visionary behind Landmarks in Biochemistry, a passionate scientist and former Director of IBqM, who passed away in 2017. Landmarks in Biochemistry stands out for its multidisciplinary nature, covering various fields such as the structure and function of essential biomolecules, development and metabolism, cellular and pathogen-host interactions, nanotechnology, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. These areas are highly relevant to the projects developed at IBqM, which address major 21st-century health challenges, including cancer, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Talks & Speakers

For this 2025 edition, the symposium will focus on aging, featuring distinguished researchers in their respective fields. This will further strengthen academic training, promote the internationalization of IBqM’s research, and contribute to scientific advancements in biochemistry and related fields.
